knee-hip

Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital’s acclaimed orthopaedic program performs over 1,200 hip, knee, shoulder, spine, hand and podiatric surgeries each year. Our program has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a High Performing Hospital in Hip Replacement; designated as a Blue Center of Distinction for Knee and Hip Replacement by Florida Blue; and awarded the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Knee Replacement.

Our program offers treatment for patients with hip and knee pain or suffering from arthritis in their joints. Orthopaedic surgeons perform surgery in the Outpatient Surgery Center or as an inpatient procedure for joint reconstruction, general orthopaedics conditions, sports injuries, spine, foot and ankle, and hand surgery using the latest surgical techniques. Many are minimally invasive procedures, which minimize the size of incisions as well as the trauma to surrounding tissue. Our surgeons perform a wide variety of orthopaedic procedures including:

  • Total and partial knee replacement
  • Knee revision
  • Knee arthroscopy
  • Total hip replacement
  • Hip revision
  • ACL repairs
  • Meniscus repairs
  • Total shoulder replacement
  • Reverse shoulder replacement
  • Shoulder revision
  • Shoulder arthroscopy
  • Minimally invasive spine surgery
  • Foot and ankle surgery
  • Hand surgery

Robotic-Assisted Surgery

Our orthopaedic surgeons can perform joint replacement surgery using robotic-assisted technology. Our surgical robot adds an unparalleled level of accuracy and precision to joint replacement surgery. Registry data shows that for partial knee replacement, this robotic technology is more accurate than manual or traditional surgery. If you’re planning for a total knee, total hip or partial knee replacement surgery, talk with your orthopaedic surgeon to determine if you may be a candidate for robotic-assisted surgery.

Direct Anterior Approach to Hip Replacement

Total hip replacement is heralded as one of the best man-made operations ever. A different method of performing this surgical procedure appears to have additional significant benefits for patients. The Direct Anterior Approach allows for a true muscle-sparing method. No muscles are cut or removed from their bony attachments. This has resulted in less pain, easier ability to ambulate immediately following the surgery, shorter time in the hospital, and a more rapid recovery. In fact, recovery milestones such as discontinuing a walking aid and walking distances have been noted to occur earlier in the post-operative period. It has also been demonstrated that a patient’s quality of gait returns at an earlier time than with other methods of performing this surgery, and patients’ time in the hospital is now reduced to 1-2 days. In short, the Direct Anterior Approach can provide a shorter time to reach functional milestones and a shorter time to recovery.

Same-day Surgery

Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital offers same-day joint replacement surgery. This outpatient procedure has as a number of benefits including:

  • Less pain
  • Fewer transfusions
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Recovery at home
  • More aggressive physical therapy

Joint Camp

Joint Program Coordinator Maria Puras, RN, guides patients through the joint replacement journey beginning with our pre-operative Joint Camp. This mandatory program covers all aspects of surgery, including pre-op preparation and what to expect after surgery through discharge. Anyone who is scheduled to have joint replacement surgery should watch the following video:

Orthopaedic Unit

All orthopaedic surgical patients recover and rehabilitate in our Orthopaedic Unit, which features 23 large, private rooms designed to meet the specific needs of orthopaedic patients. Located on the hospital’s 5th floor, the Orthopaedic Unit is designated as a ‘clean floor” – patients with infections are not permitted. This restriction prevents the spread of infection and provides an optimal environment for wound healing.

American Joint Replacement Registry

The hospital is a proud member of the American Joint Replacement Registry, an organization which contributes to the overall advancement of the field of orthopaedics through data and data sharing. This national registry of trends and outcomes is a powerful tool that has helped improve the care of hip and knee replacement patients.
